      and George Allen too.
What about Johhny Reb? The scared 17 year old kid who was told only that his home, life, and rights were threatened, then thrust out in front of a garrison do die in a hail of bullets from the first rifled barrels?
He didn't own slaves, you know.
None of it was his idea.
He was just 18, proud and brave, when a Yankee laid him in his grave.
All war is a tragedy. No war should ever happen.
But it is part of what makes us who we are.

someone asked a rebel prisoner why he was fighting and he answered "because you're here."

          •  That is true (0+ / 0-)

and the rejoinder to it is-

And y'all fired the first shots in anger- at us. That's why we're here, to put down this insurrection.

the south wouldn't have fired had they been allowed to secede.

              •  And that would be incorrect (0+ / 0-)

There had been no attempt to put down secession when the Confederacy turned it into a shooting war.

That just shows Lincoln was better at PR than the Southern Oilgarchs. He that loses his temper first, loses, so to speak.

a hundred and forty three years later, and you're still pissed off.
You remind me of guys I knew in VA who had rebel flag stickers on their cars with the words, "Help! They're still invading!"
Maybe you should get one that says, "Help! They're still revolting!"
(Go ahead with the obvious pun. You know you want to.)

                  •  Nope not pissed off at all (0+ / 0-)

But the facts are the facts and I like nothing better than to gobsmack those who pine for the "Lost Cause" with the facts. The facts destroy the propaganda that has saturated and distorted this sorry episode of American History. It's been going on since 1877 and too many people believe it.

Well, I'm here to tell you it's all bullshit. The South made their own damn bed and by god they will lie in it.

                    The proper term for this war by the way is;

"The War to Put Down the Treason of the Southern Oligarchs".

                    ;)

                    And that's the truth.

that the civil war wasn't fought over secession?  that south carolina just woke up one day and decided to fire on ft. sumter?

        •  Yeah (0+ / 0-)

so much aggression that's why it was Cadets from the citadel that fired the first shots of the war on Jan. 12, 1861. A full three months before an organized attack was launched on Fort Sumter.

No matter how wingnuts would like to re-write it, it was their philosophical ancestors that fired the first shots.

And after getting their asses kicked, they whine about "aggression". Fuck that.

      •  What about (0+ / 0-)

falling for the propaganda of the Oligarchy?

That was what motivated most "Johnny Rebs". And there were wide swaths of the Confederacy that DID NOT fall for it and actively fought the Confederacy from behind its borders.

I am sorry, these people got themselves and hundreds of thousadns of others killed. Those who advocate secession are agitating mass murder. The cold stell is too good for them.

        •  No one worth listening to (0+ / 0-)

          is advocating secession TODAY.
We got these idiots here in VT doing it. And idiots is what they are. They're a joke.
What I'm invoking here is a chapter in our country's history.
It's part of who we are.
In order to have a re-enactment, you need guys to play BOTH sides.
They never had any trouble finding guys to play Union soldiers at reenactments when I lived in the Shenandoah Valley....
..I met Abe Lincoln at the Rockingham County Fair.
And Grant. And Robert E. Lee.
          Don't confuse history with wingnuttery.

          •  However the point is (0+ / 0-)

at least what I understood of it is that Beck was. And so, the very thought of such talk brought up the horror of what that talk once did (and no I do not for a minute believe there is a chance of secession) It was merely an opportunity to hurl some vitriol "his way" expressing my contempt and disgust.

I am really sorry I said a damn thing at all. It seems I am easily mis-understood.

            •  Well, I'm certainly (0+ / 0-)

              not defending Beck.
Maybe the silver lining of the Civil War is it gives us a handy way to ridicule today's secessionist idiots.
I'd taken, due to her ties with the AIP, to calling Sarah Palin a "Confedereskimo." >;)
