all the Iraqis who've likely died as the result of the invasion in ways other than directly being killed by it, because they've lost access to decent health care and nutritious food, have had their water supply and sewage systems ruined, etc. Plus the violent crime that always erupts in destroyed countries. Plus the millions of displaced Iraqis. And the severe diminishment of their quality of life, and massive psychological toll, especially on children who will likely be traumatized for life. And so on. The human cost is vast and incalculable, and goes WAY beyond those who have been violently killed by occupation forces, insurgents, militias and terrorists.

And yet we continue to maintain the bizarre fantasy that our troops (who are also being killed and otherwise damaged, btw) need to stay there for years to "protect" Iraqis. If what we've been doing there is to "protect" them, I shudder to think what exactly we've been protecting them from, other than us. This is protection that is no different from what organized crime has popularly called "protection". Um, yeah.

Orwell said all that needed to be said.

The liberal soul shall be made fat. He who waters shall be watered also himself. (Proverbs 11:25)
