    last winter, many bullwhip kelps and their holdfasts had been washed up by the gales that had been pummeling the coast for weeks. I cut a holdfast off of a shorter specimen that had gotten fairly dried out above the spring tide line, but it wasn't until I got it home that I found the red brittle star still clinging to the underside. Holdfasts are great little biomes on their own merit, and in the ensuing year, all sorts of tiny things have fallen out of the folds onto the white plate on which I display it.
