I'd say that with our piece meal - anemic - approach to healthcare in this country that we are far, far more vulnerable than most other industrialized nations are.  If you have the flu and no access to a doctor, you're more likely to spread the disease and it is more likely to kill you.

I agree with you that pandemic hype (different than real and active planning) is not helpful. I also agree that that current health crisis is the priority. however, it's all of a piece. Health reform without public health reform leaves us vulnerable, and it's the public health folks that track flu and recommend vaccines, etc.

will help the public health folks do their jobs better - catch these things before they get out of control - help them identify the first few victims to speed the development of a vaccine.

I have never disagreed that there is a public threat posed by viral diseases.  I trust the scientists and even know some of the people who work in this field.  I have though objected to the Bush Administration's use of this threat to scare people whilst refusing to actually do the very things that would help reduce that threat.  But what else is new from the Bush Administration?  Remember their solution to this threat was to make plans to lock down entire cities after we'd been hit.  Rather than looking at the drivers for illness in this society and finding ways to create conditions in which we are a healthier society across the board - so that we have a better chance of living through these viral events.
