"Bbb...bbb...bbbut the numbers say endless growth is possible! What is this 'sanity check' you little people speak of? Don't you know that growth never ends and is ALWAYS good? So saith the almighty graphs!"

This is the wall of stupid we're bashing our heads against. By the way, what ever happened to the talk of Sarkozy (I think) convening a new Bretton Woods conference to redefine and rework capitalism? That's sounding better every day, at least after watching CNBC these past few months.

"The numbers say that the Earth is a sphere of such-and-such diameter.  Where do you get an infinity out of that?"

Put the ball in their court.  Make them work out the justifications for their assertions using empirical science and known facts about the physical world.  They will be unable to do so.  If they are intellectually honest they will have to admit it and change their assumptions.

I haven't heard about Sarkozy; say more....

is measured in increasing complexity rather than increasing overall volume. When an environmental range fills to carrying capacity with species, the biomass keeps increasing by diversifying, creating and filling new niches for different species, not greater numbers of established species. Not infinite either, but more capacity than you might think, even in closed systems. That said, I'm not a fan of the free market and I have significant problems with unsustainable growth and selfish efficiency and I hope that between Sarkozy, Stieglitz and all the other smart, sensible people out there, we can get something better than what we've got up and running.
