    More difficult this time, sure; PRC is a much stronger state than ROC or Chinese Empire was.  Hardly impossible though, even by recent Chinese history.

      one might speculate that that is why the Chinese spent an enormous amount of money this year importing all kinds of "security" technology from the West.

      The causes of the last Chinese civil war were almost entirely unrelated to the Great Depression.  Last time around, there was a decade of warlordism and lack of central government before [what would become] the governments of the PRC and ROC really started going at it.
