  •  "all about Obama"? - that doesn't make any sense (1+ / 0-)

If this race was important to Obama, he would have made every effort to get Martin elected.

He didn't.  It's as simple as that.

Martin from the get-go (not the best candidate ever, solidly republican state, special election with low turnout, etc, etc) and didn't want to see the cable news networks blabbing about how the Obama appeal has worn off?  You know that'd be the headline for the next few weeks -- at least until a cute white kid got kidnapped, Paris got another DWI or OJ made a run for it.

Obama is a pretty savvy politician.  He isn't going to spend political capital on a lost cause.  I'm kind of glad he stayed away.

a member of your own party.  Win or lose.  Indeed, you lose political capital if you don't.  You also send a message that you don't care that much.

        •  I disagree with that assessment, but regardless (2+ / 0-)

I'm sure you'd agree that Obama has more important things to do right now than stump for someone whose loss was basically a foregone conclusion.

Would you rather have him working on the economic crisis and building his team or stumping for someone who lost by 14 points?  Do you really think Obama could have overcome that margin with one or two campaign stops?

...but not everyone gave up in advance.

Walk and chew bubble gum.  There's no reason he couldn't have had his "national security team" conference in, say, Savannah, Georgia.  Sandwiched by a couple campaign appearances with Martin.

And regardless, pundits still did their predictable concern trolling about how this was a pushback against Obama and the Democratic Party.  If you're going to take the hits regardless of what you do, you might as well take the risk and hope that it pays off.
