    He'd better watch his back, because, like you said, this seat has switched parties regularly every 6 years since Sam Ervin retired.

      passed on the chance to take on Liddy Dole. Maybe because they thought Liddy was too tough to take down, or because they thought Burr was an easier target.

      Either way, there are several good solid Democrats who could challenge Burr.  Attorney General Roy Cooper would be my choice.  He was the top vote-getter in the statewide races this year, winning 61%-39%. He has done a great job as Atty General, suing the TVA and the EPA over air pollution. And he can run for senate without giving up his current position.

      Sec of State Eleaine Marshall - just elected to her 4th term - would be another good choice, as would Treasurer Richard Moore.  Moore will be out of a job in January after losing in the primary for Governor.
