    where I worked at an ad agency that had the bulk of Amtrak's business. Now this was the mid-90s, but a talking point we often used was our per capita spending on rail was one step down from Colombia.

    BTW: I don't know how you can live the east coast and not get how cool rail is.

      Taking the old electric train from Newcastle to Sydney, I keep thinking how crazy it is that the only passenger trains running through this part of Northeast Ohio are one each way, between Midnight and 6am.

      But with around 16 hours from DC to Chicago, and running a bare skeleton route structure, the route that makes sense is an overnight sleeper train, leaving DC after 5pm and arriving in Chicago before 9am.
