  •  Rebuild treacherous rural roads! (4+ / 0-)

In rural america many of the two lane highways were built by the WPA and have received nothing but a few thin coats of asphalt since. They're narrow and have no shoulders for bicyclists. If a truck goes into the steeply sloped ditches they roll over instead of gradually rolling to a stop. I'm not advocating for freeways- just two 12 foot wide lanes with paved 8 foot wide shoulders and gradually sloping ditches instead of dropoffs, and turn lanes at busy intersections.

    •  Every road built should have a bike lane. (4+ / 0-)

I watched a kid get hit and propelled 50 feet through the air for lack of a bike lane.  I had a chance to ask the engineer on that project why there were no bike lanes.  He told me it was because they did not want pedestrian bike traffic.  The kid survived, but I bet his medical bills cost more than putting in the frickin' bike lane.
