    ...the Left Hand of Darkness is a classic (I refrained from chiming in 'cause I'm running out the door and didn't want to leave the conversation dangling -- but here I are)...

    You might want to check out "Shadow Man" by Melissa Scott.   It is not as good as Le Guin as writing (very few books are) but it is, imnsho, a more sophisticated treatment of gender (probably as much to do with publication date as anything else -- The Left Hand of Darkness has been around for awhile).  One transie's opinion -- the Scott is the best SF as SF treatment of gender I've found to date.

    There is also a biography of James Tiptree out (aka Alice Sheldon) which includes a long correspondence with Le Guin.  Some of it was included in an excellent F&SF peice.
