  •  Cynicism or realism? We have always been (4+ / 0-)

a long way from the ideal we've been fed.  There has never been a time this country has been even close to what we were taught in school.  Never.  That doesn't mean we have to become cynical about it.  But accepting reality is important, and getting over our arrogance over being "the greatest" would be wise.  Then maybe we can start acknowledging our shortcomings and so start improving.

That's not to say I don't believe we're not incredibly lucky to be living here.  Or that there aren't good things our country has done and accomplished.  But to pretend there's not a whole lot of bad, too, and buying into the fake patriotism of pretending we're this equal society out helping the rest of the world, and that it's everyone's dream to move to America won't get us closer to what we should be.

There's a balance I'd sure like to see us aiming for.  Of course, every country is the same.  Everyone country propagandizes to its citizens.  Every country tries to rewrite history so that it's the hero or the victim rather than the aggressor.  I just think ours might be a little more egregious than some others.
