  •  It is a problem in DC (10+ / 0-)

There are a LOT of gov't employees (the well-paid ones) who have serious problems finding legal service workers. I know, the rich whine, and they can vacuum and mow like the rest of us but here is the problem:

It creates a serious issue for both taxes and on gov't disclosure forms to pay someone directly (W-2) and administer payroll. Nobody ever wants to get paid as a contractor (1099). The easiest solution is to hire a licensed and bonded company...except they don't hire legal people a lot of the time.

So, trying to find a lawn service, housecleaner, or even a handyman becomes a difficult thing. I know one person who merely insisted on seeing the business license and bond of cleaning companies before hiring them. She went through a half dozen listed, recommended-by-friends companies before even finding one who was willing to show her a business license.

I have no pity, but at least Chertoff apparently tried to do the right thing by going with a legitimate company. I might be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, despite the risk of TRs.

    •  I gotta agree with you. (3+ / 0-)

As a customer of a business, it's neither my responsibility to verify the employment status of every employee of that business nor should it be. If anything, this is a scandal on the cleaning company, not Chertoff.

By this standard, there'd be a scandal anytime he ate at a resturaunt, hired a contractor, got a vehicle cleaned or repaired, bought a bag of chips at a convenience store, has gasoline pumped or performed any other mundane task if the company or business in question hired illegal immigrants. It's an absurd standard for any person to be held to.

More pointedly, I presume the Secret Service has better things to do than verify people's immigration status. (Part of) their job is to verify threats that may cause harm to top officials; I doubt they consider lack of documentation automatically to mean a threat.

      •  Yeah. I'm actually waiting for the end of (0+ / 0-)

all this "o noez he hired illegal immigrants!!!" shit.

I don't check the papers of people who work in my yard or clean my house. Forget it. I treat them fairly and they do a great job.
