  •  Why worry about earthquakes? (0+ / 0-)

    Arken:

I used to go to sea with reactor plants that not only were able to do "angles and dangles" and withstand the rocking and rolling of sea state 5, but several of them have been tested with nearby explosions to ensure they could withstand shock.

A couple of years ago, the USS San Francisco did the unthinkable - it ran head first into an underwater mountain at high speed. Hurt a bunch of the sailors, killed one, but did no permanent damage to the reactor plant. In fact, the ship has been restored and will soon begin operating again.

Earthquakes do not have to be a problem for nuclear plants designed with motion in mind.

during the recent earthquake that knocked several reactors off line in Japan and killed several dozen people in the town, apparently the LEAST damaged part of the town, the safest place to be, was in those reactor complexes.
