    will help.
Our personal experiences of the industry differ a bit.
I work for a supplier to the automotive industry and see vast differences in the behaviors of the management teams at BMW compared to GM -- especially regarding investment in technology to increase efficiency, supply-chain management and ability to make decisions and follow through.
There are differences in employee compensation -- but I see BMW actively managing their purchasing, design, prototyping and production processes better.

        it crazy-making.

I've seen one company move ahead with new technology to improve product quality and reduce the expense of prototyping and design approvals by 50% -- while another manages only to debate, discuss and defend a status quo.

Maybe it is all doom and gloom up north; I don't know.

GM's plant near Toronto, was once praised by David Cole, president of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor who said,

"If all of GM’s assembly plants operated like Oshawa, the automaker would reap billions in earnings. Not millions or hundreds of millions, but literally billions of added profit."

That was 2004; now, the plant will be laying off hundreds of workers and shutting down production, temporarily, come January.
