  •  Retooling is what we need (16+ / 0-)

If our automakers are given the ability to fund retooling our plants, then they can continue to churn out less expensive and greener cars.

At the GM Delta plant, a mere 5 minutes from my place, the proud men and women of UAW Local 602 have been literally pleading for years now to be able to have the tools to make the green cars of the future.

The will is there, now we need to provide them with the way to make it happen.

    •  Exactly! We need to get money invested (3+ / 0-)

there in order to do that and we need to ensure that there is sufficient demand for these cars. We need to make sure people are working, perhaps providing subsidies (or giving the cars away for trade-in of old cars) and we need to open up the lines of credit for this to happen.

I would really support a nationalisation (either part or total) of the big three, the plants and production can be restructured to produce more environmentally friendly cars. This will also keep the jobs that exist (and increase their number due to the increased demand and investment). Once they have been restructured, they can be re-privatised or not (become a long-term asset for the US). We just need to keep the industry going until we have people in office that are willing to do this.

Thank you for this wonderfully written and beautiful diary Lucy! My thoughts are with you, your family and the middle and working class people of Michigan.
