  •  Why do you insist that those women... (7+ / 0-)

This really is a freedom of choice issue.  I will always defend that, even if I disagree with the choice made.

a rational choice.  But it's probably more likely that the dominant culture are having a detrimental effect on them.

But, please, defend the rationality of gay men staying in the closet.

disallow these procedures, but instead wanted to express an sincere opinion about them.

The context being that society may play more of a role in helping women make the decision to have her labial lips altered for a more "youthful" appearance (only one example as to why, of course)

Women would choose such cosmetic procedures for various reasons: reconstruction, new construction, visual enhancement of the original appearance, etc.  In which cases does society have more of an influence vs. what the person actually feels about themselves in a healthy, self-affirming fashion?

None of us can truly answer that, but for ourselves.

But, when we hear explanations such as wanting to look more youthful, I personally start to wonder about our age-obsessed and male-opinion-obsessed cultural values being at play, too.  Therefore, there might be times when I see the choice as more a sad product of deep, external influences than internal need or joy.  Of course, I can't fully say, but am still allowed a personal opinion on the subject - never would I seek to deny the right to a valid medical procedure.

And I don't think that my being trans should be a reason to discount that opinion I have, which was what in my view was happening in that diary.

        •  Guess I didn't see that happening in the diary, (0+ / 0-)

          but accept your perspective.

I fully agree that your opinion is equally valid as anyone's on that subject, or any subject, of course.  I'm not sure why anyone would discount your opinion for any other reason than they just simply don't agree with it or your premise, perhaps - simply because of your nature as being trans seems awfully biased to me.

Admittedly, I didn't go through every post at the time, as I was concentrating on a subthread concerning our favorite diarist on male circumcision and jumping through other diaries in parallel.
