that would be my annual average.

Of course I don't know if that would account for the mant feet of snow that would occlude aflat (tilted) panel.....

    •  depends on what you are after (4+ / 0-)

if it's heating then you'll need to know equivalent power needs to get a rough idea for your heat flux requirement. Electric power is more direct, as you have some dailt kWh target.  After that you're getting into a solar contractor type territory, what is the best solution for your existing house, heat storage solutions, and all that.

Snow is a problem if it can build up enough to cover the panels. But that sounds like a lot of snow weight on the roof, do you get that much build-up?   (sez the person that mostly has lived in New Mexico, California, and the PNW - sun or rain, neither of which need shoveling)

      •  we can get a ton of snow build up (3+ / 0-)

(figuratively) We live at 7000 feet in the Sierra Nevada and can have 20 feet of snow on the ground which then "bridges" to the roof and covers the roof.  I guess I'd need a specialist to come hve alooksee in mid February.....

        Thanks for the advice!

          wondering if

You can put a loop of flexible pipe on a controlled switch to melt ice and snow as needed. It'll keep the system uncovered and working for you.

For Heating,..Go for the vacumm tubes instead of the flat plate collectors and install more mass (water tanks) if possible.
