    dependent on where you are, that $3k is a great deal. Considering that you can get a 30% Federal tax credit (and might get local), that means a $1800 cost.  For that, you end up meeting perhaps 70-80% of your household hot water use with the solar.

      out of you're home or are a business the depreciation means you make an additional 15% on your money.

      $100,000 system minus the Federal Tax of 30%

      $70,000  if nothing else defers the cost the value of the equipment depreciated over the next 5yrs or 1 yr if you want is

      $85,000 meaning you get an added return on your money.  Your tax lawyer can tell you more than I.
