How's Henry Lee III, governor of VA and U.S. rep.

Second cousin, once removed of Thomas Jefferson, U.S. President.

First cousin of Richard Lee, one of the presidents of the Continental Congress.

Descended from various Kings of England.

Descended from a King of Jerusalem.

Descended from a King of Castile.

Wife of a descendant of a King of Scotland.

Father of Robert E. Lee, confederate general.

Father of Henry Lee IV, speechwriter for Andrew Jackson.

Yeah, this dynasty shit is a disturbing "new" trend.

Yes, Santa Claus, there is a Virginia. And it went Democratic.

This has always been with us (though points for using the Lee family instead of perpetual example the John Adams family), but in recent years its starting to increase to the level of that period of time.  Compare the Senate now compared to as recently as the 80s, as a for instance.

A lot of new faces appeared as a result of Vietnam's and the Civil War Movement's effect on disrupting the Democratic party establishment, as well as the anti-incumbency mood of the post-Watergate elections in '74 and '76. That would explain the relative decline in dynasties in the '80s.

the aging and death of the WWII generation has eliminated a big class of "earned nobility", so to speak, from the congressional talent pool.

(But the Senate was still chock full of dynasties in the 70s and 80s, of course.)

    •  And Bushrod Washington, (0+ / 0-)

      SCOTUS Justice, nephew of George.

The Adams family had a nice run too.

But let's fix the arts dynasties! The Jameses were bad enough - now we've got the Sheens and the Bridges...
