  •  Dana Milbank was in Yale Skull & Bones society (0+ / 0-)

I haven't been able to trace any parental connections yet, but the fact he was a Yale undergrad in S & B strongly suggests something.

I know he hasn't commented on this Kennedy thing (as far as I know) but he's certainly been at the forefront of the idiotic attempts to tie Obama and Blago, going so far as to ridicule education policy statements as being irrelevant (as diaried elsewhere).

I'm furious about this... I'm not a Perotian, and I do accept the reality of a Washington elite. But journalists cannot be allowed to continue this game of being holier than thou and not disclosing industry ties, familial ties, and pretend that they are indifferent, unbiased, and objective reporters of the facts.

MediaMatters and TPM have done good work in identifying these problems, but it's important to build on that and attack these elite journalists - this is how the Republicans were able to overcome the opposition to Reagan by the media elite in the early '80s, and finally ending up with the victory over Rather by Bush I in 1988.

Part of this is going to fall on Democrats though... Democrats in congress and the white house have to be a little less idealistic... the way Obama is handling these press conferences gives hope, but there's still a lot of growing up to be done.

if it means that I accept that nothing I do will ever change that reality. I would completely leave activism, if that were the case.

      •  to clarify - it needs to have its hold on power (0+ / 0-)

broken... I just want to be realistic that in some form there is going to be a Washington power circle that perpetuates if only because we locate the institutions of federal government in a small geographic area.

But the key is that the elite has to be exposed in all its aspects, including the media component... Republicans have framed this as a "liberal media" problem, and we have to continue and expand efforts to make it understood as an "elite" or "corporate" problem.

      •  if there were not an elite there would be (0+ / 0-)

no need for activism, then we'd have to invent something else to resist or be envious of.  Human evolution hardwires us to rise to the top of the heap and save the spots for our children. It's inherent in our genetic makeup.

        •  That genetic bullshit... (0+ / 0-)

leaves me cold. Social Darwinism has also left a great many people out in the cold, with claims that maybe they aren't "wired" as well as others, so don't deserve housing and the likes.
