    So.... I'm an ER doctor of Irish descent and a member of the English diplomatic delegation comes into my hospital with a life threatening injury from, say, a car accident.  

    I look deeply into my conscience and have some vague memory that the English had massacred my forebears and occupied Ireland for centuries so they should all go to hell.  I let the guy die on the table in the ER - I'm good, yes?

      yep, you would be perfectly within your rights. If you or anyone else would like to hear the segment, the show was Day to Day, and I think they archive their shows & segments on NPR's site.
