    Thanks for the info there. They are supposed to send some money back: that's the rub.

      US banks routinely place "holds" on foreign checks/MOs, usually for 30-60 days, as a preventative measure against just this kind of check fraud. I have run into this many times - my bank would hold a foreign check without releasing funds until the check clears. All banks do this.

      It sounds more like a money-laundering scheme to me. It works the same, except the check/MO is good and comes from a third party, who is also a victim. That victim believes he is purchasing something valuable(car, computer, jewelry, etc), and sends the check to you, who cashes it, keeps a fraction, and forwards the balance to the recruiter, who then disappears. You are left with the consequences, attempting to explain to the first victim and the police how you really aren't a crook even though it appears you were acting as the fraudster's agent.
