One of the greatest joys of our life as a family is that our kids are very close to one of our sets of grandparents (distance and age makes one set less close, but they love the kids no less). And the close set aren't even biological grandparents. My wife's biological parents abandoned her, and she was raised by her aunt (kids grandma). We even set it up in our will that they have grandparent's rights.

So, religion trumps family. I've seen it before, and I can't understand it. In earlier times, my marriage would be 'wrong'. My wife is Catholic, I'm ELCA Lutheran.
The family may not approve of their kid's family setup, but to isolate the grandkids, and then to try to 'brainwash' and intimidate the grandkid to go live with them, is impossible for me to accept. Your family is the most important part of your life, more than whatever religion you follow.
