Don't get me wrong, the visual effects produced by ILM can be amazing, but it can also be lacking when compared to the old model work. There's been some movement in Hollywood to return to "real fake," when possible, instead of using CGI.

For example, compare the CGI Enterprise created for "Remasterd TOS," to the Enterprise that looks absolutely amazing in the model work used for 'The Search For Spock.'

    •  I dislike that since CGI got less expensive (1+ / 0-)

      You started to get the:

      Dialog -

      ( input some CGI shootemup)

      Dialog -

was almost formula writing. Tossing it in for no reason other then they could.

      •  Which is a fault of the writing (2+ / 0-)

CGI has its place, and there's some wonderful examples of it done by some very talented people (my roommate among them).

But it's a tool, like anything else, with a proper use and an improper use.

If God hadn't wanted us to fly, he wouldn't have given us Bernoulli's Principle.

CGI and models are both tools and every tool has a proper use in a proper place at a proper time.

Also, the economics allows more things to have effects when CGI is used, since it's a cheaper method. And when used correctly and done by talented visual effects artists, it can be wonderful.

But you're right, there's simply nothing like watch that ship float by like there was real wind in its sails.

If God hadn't wanted us to fly, he wouldn't have given us Bernoulli's Principle.

      Mr. Scott:
"The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain."

I've always taken that to heart in my engineering endeavors.

The model stuff always felt more "real" than the CGI...even with the amazing things that CGI can do these days.

Time to find a new sig...
