    Note, that I'm not unappreciative of your view. But exploiting or commercializing space is also exploratory in nature. Fred C. Dobbs was exploring the Sierra Madre. The difference is whether the knowledge or ore or manufactured product is shared or held proprietary.

      Columbus wasn't doing exploration out of the good of his heart - he wanted to find a cheaper route to the Indies, so his country could make more money.  

      My problem isn't government funding.  HEll, its not that space can't provide inspiration.  Its that I KNOW space can provide so many more resources to us, beyond simple inspiration.  But for that to happen, we have to invest, and we have to be willing to take a chance.  A real chance.  And selling space on inspiration has been done so often, its not risking.  

      Really taking a chance on it would be saying that "we can use space development as one of the cornerstones needed to get out of the current economic slump"
