    Look, if there's one thing we know, George W. Bush can't be bothered to do his homework. Look at all the executions he signed off on in Texas without ever bothering to read the summaries. He's always relied on others to do the heavy lifting while he skated on oblivious.

    This pardon almost certainly came out of the money side of the White House political operation; somebody called in a favor. Everything else has been for sale all through the administration - pardons are about all Bush has left that anyone's interested in these days.

    No, the only mystery is why they're bothering to try to take back the pardon. After 8 years of anything goes, why this case should stick is anyone's guess. I would not believe anyone in the White House has a sense of shame at this point - so it has to be something else.

    Maybe Bush is worried about his legacy? He's given almost no pardons to date (saving them all for January 19 probably). Then again, I've wondered about the last-minute scenario. Bush pardons Cheney, then resigns, Cheney is sworn in, and pardons Bush. Then they both ride off into the sunset.
