  •  Do you know what GOTV is? (0+ / 0-)

GOTV is "Get Out The Vote".  The month before an election you only talk to people who already support you, to make sure they get out and vote. We don't have the man power to waste on nonsupporters during GOTV, and it would be counter-productive to the goal of winning elections. We try to convince people earlier in the campaign, not during GOTV. That's strategy, it's how we win elections.  Feel free to ask Dean about that, if you can.

The contact rate for distance one has to walk has everything to with how effective a door-to-door GOTV campaign is.

However, if you assume, or already know that GOTV is going to be high, because in this instance of Obama's candidacy, persuasion until the last minute is important. If the election was expected to have a low turnout, then yes - get your supporters out - and that is the key to victory.

But, again, when you expect that voters are going to turn out because of another race, then the track to take is to push up your margins in areas where you are likely to succeed, and limit your losses in other areas. In this case, limiting the margins in "conservative" areas, or among African Americans and Latinos might have been enough. For African Americans and Latinos, they were not not going to vote.

      •  What you're talking about is NOT GOTV (0+ / 0-)

it's persuasion. So, you think you should have done door-to-door persuasion till the last minuet? People stationed at polling places can do that more efficiently.  They see every person going into the polling place right before they vote.  That's a more efficient than walking long distances to find people who haven't voted yet, because you can contact everyone going into the polling place, you don't miss the people who aren't home, or who's house you get to after they voted, like you do when you're going door-to-door.
