    is that after Brennan (the initial pick) withdrew due to pro-Bush torture-era policies apologia, Obama was looking for an experienced candidate who was free of any link to Bush era intelligence policies to avoid the same mess and it was a hard slog to find one and he finally gave up.

    I think what he had to do was pick an extremely competent manager and executive when it became clear that he wasn't going to be able to pick somebody with longstanding intelligence experience who might have past support for Gitmo era policies in the closet.

    I was really surprised he didn't go the Jane Harman route, but she must have had some bad votes in the past that Obama either didn't want to stand behind or didn't think would pass without torture-era controversy.

    The confirmation hearings are going to be rough if Diane Finestein and Jay Rockefeller's objections are fixed.
