    they've been a hacking community for some time.

    If this is true, sounds like they are crackers, as well (in the traditional sense of being an unethical hacker).

    Although, it's also possible that the real crackers sought to implicate Astalavista in order to deflect attention from themselves.  Forensics should be interesting.

      Most of these scripts do a pretty good job of wiping out traces of access.

      If the systems stay around long enough, it might be interesting to see who comes knocking on the door thinking to get entry, though.

        erasing their network footprints, unless they also cracked the local gateways/routers.

        On the server, sure - erasing logs isn't too hard, unless someone decided to realtime backup the logs.
