of the border.  Your question about the value of lives is interesting and also very disturbing...I find it puzzling that the Palestinians think it's reasonable to demand that 400 prisoners be set free from Israel's jails in exchange for the remains of 2 Israeli soldiers...and the Israelis agree to this.  What do you think that says about the value of those lives?

The imbalance in lives lost in this most recent battle with Hamas does not in any way reflect a lack of effort on the part of Hamas.  I shudder to think what the death tolls might be if they ever achieve their aims.  Their dream of establishing a radical Islamic state in the region does not include converting the Jews to Islam...If they could, they would make sure not one Israeli Jew survives to pollute their empire.

It is not Israeli policy to specifically target civilians.  And no Israeli celebrates the loss of innocent lives.  There is no dancing in the street, just somber resolve that something had to finally be done to provide security for Israeli citizens. I just came back from Israel, and this somber attitude is what I saw everywhere.  People living within rocket range of Hamas are terrified.  Everyone else is worried sick about the safety of their sons, fathers, brothers, boyfriends and husbands in Gaza -- trying to destroy Hamas weapons and fighters so that kids in Israel can finally go back to school and people won't have to sleep in bomb shelters.

The Israelis army drops leaflets announcing impending attacks and literally call Hamas militants at home to warn them of attacks so that their families can find safety elsewhere.  I read in an Israeli newspaper that a Hamas leader was killed in his home, together with his 4 wives and several children.  He had received a phone call telling him that his home would be bombed in a few minutes.  Sadly, the family died together because they chose not to leave the building.

I desperately wish that Egypt would have opened their border with Gaza to allow women and children a safe refuge in Egypt.  It is terrible that so many are caught in the middle of the war-zone!

I got more sleep before DKos...but I need less now.

civilized and innocent.  As if it hasn't been occupying the West Bank since 1967 (and, I would argue, in effect still occupies Gaza); as if Israeli settlers don't kill Palestinian civilians; as if the blockages and the road blocks and the bypass roads and the land confiscations aren't happening.  No, Israel is somber and never celebrates the loss of innocent lives.  What crap.  There are Israelis who are happy with what is happening, just as there are Palestinians who are happy.  There are extremists on both sides, and the ones on the Israeli side have bigger and better weapons.
