I am of the opinion that Afghanistan is where we should have been all along. And I don't see a reason to pull up our tents and go home just yet. Given that up front I think we do need to get it right in Afghanistan.

The main thing to focus on is doing this the right way, not the Bush way. Empower the locals to properly take back their own countryside and stay out of the political side of the country. Once we leave they will be the ones left to get along with their people and neighbors, not us. The fact is we FUBAR'd our way through Iraq. It was a mistake from concept through today. But Afghanistan is where Bin Laden ran this mess from and the Taliban are still operating in the region. This time lets deal with them right.

No ground offensive on our part will do the trick. It's the economy stupid. We help them get their defenses stablized, their economy going in a positive direction then do targeted strikes with their support and authorization on Taliban strongholds. Don't leave our troops exposed directing traffic or standing guard in their country. The less they see of our troops the better for them and us. Fly in, deploy, strike and pull out. Not pretty, but at least with their support it would be less intrusive and a helluva lot less death on both sides. And as long as there is positive support and joint responsibility with the Afghan government things can continue. But no more go it alone. UN involvement in stabilizing the government is mandatory. Not NATO either. United Nations is the best format. It won't tick off the neighbors as much as having NATO troops there.
