Iraq. While Iraq has a significant sectarian problem ,most of Iraq's recent problems rose out of chaos in the wake of US invasion. That three years of chaos was undone by two-three years of work beginning with sunni awakening in 2005. Afghanistan's chaos goes back over 30 years. It has no civic infrastructure, no education, a whole generation of people who've grown up with nothing. This simply cannot be undone by putting 20k more US troops there. Just can't be done. Obama is free to give this a shot, of course, but unless he plans to adopt Afghanistan as 51st state and is ready to invest 50 billion dollars a year building up Afghanistan's infrastructure for next 30 years, surge won't do squat.

for building the infrastructure?  There is no way to invest that much there in the first place.  You're playing fast and loose with the facts, and yet it's the fictional $50 billion figure on which your position hangs.

IOW, yes, we won't solve Afghanistan with only 20,000 more troops.  It will also involve sustained commitment and investment of several billion a year.

We owe the Afghans that much several times over.
