  •  I agree this is way too pessimistic (3+ / 0-)

One way our media IS going to be useful in not letting this happen is that once it "brands" someone, it's almost impossible to shake off. Do you think Paris Hilton, even if she settles down, gets married, has kids and devotes her life to charitable works, will ever stop being the skank to late-night talk-show hosts? I'm fascinated by the presistence of joke frames that are tired and almsot meaningless: Jay Leno telling jokes about how wooden Al Gore is or how he allegedly invented the Internet. Although the more educated among us now thing of Al Gore in a different way, to a vast swath of the public, he's the wooden self-aggrandizer, and always will be. In fact, I think it's the unserious media that will save us here. Obama just isn't intrinisically funny and the talk-show hosts are going to be reaching back for their Bush material to fill the gap. You can already see it in hosts like Conan O'brien and David Letterman who have a clear distaste for Bush. Once you are a joke, you never live it down, especially when there's no new material coming from D.C. to take your place. Joe Biden is unlikely to shoot anyone in the face.

    •  Even Letterman and Craig Ferguson, (0+ / 0-)

both of whom I like and think are pretty funny, still do (Bill) Clinton sex jokes quite often.  Let it go, guys!  Isn't there a point where Monica Lewinsky just isn't funny any more?  (if she was ever.)
