In many areas, you've got one corporation (Clear Channel) owning multiple radio frequencies, so they're controlling the access. Here in the Bay Area, they've got at least one conservative talk station (maybe more), and also the local Air America affiliate -- and guess who gets the frequency with the shittier signal, especially at night when most people would be listening?

Fortunately, I've got an iPhone app that lets me pick up the signal over the WiFi or the 3G network (though it does occasionally cut out when it's rebuffering); I can also pick up other stations in parts of the country like KPOJ in Portland or KTLK in Los Angeles.

We're seeing that intelligent programming from a center/left to left direction can succeed -- folks like Ed Schultz (and I know he's not everyone's cup of tea) and Stephanie Miller frequently defeat their conservative counterparts in some markets, and we've seen the TV ratings successes of shows like Keith Olbermann's and Rachel Maddow's. If we could get more access to the airwaves, that could increase.
