    ... in this one from Oklahoma.  Cows and ranchers replacing bison and Indians as the march of "progress".

    Not unlike what I learned about Indians in grade school.  That they existed long ago, with no hint that they're still around.

      You mean they didn't just "exit stage left" with all the buffalo as depicted here?

      I was just doing some reading and found that the artist of the Ames post office mural, Lowell Houser, spent some time in Mexico studying and working with Jean Charlot depicting Mayan murals when Rivera and several others were in Mexico City.  He talks a little about the Federal arts projects of the time in this interview from the Smithsonian.

        Healthier to eat, better match for the landscape than cows.  Ted Turner (of all people) has done a lot to promote buffalo ranching in the west in recent years.  Quite a few tribes have herds now, too.
