  •  Reagan's funding (0+ / 0-)

I recall that someone figured out that there was more money for military marching bands in the Reagan budget than for all the arts combined.  (Forget which year...)

his "idea" was that the private sector would "take up the slack".  as he began talking about cutting social security, though, the main funders of the art (in the private sector) pulled back as many were retired seniors.

my personal impact was after designing two ballets for a company down south, they were to "send me the check" on monday after i left on sunday nite.  on monday, the company business manager explained that their expected donors had pulled out explaining that they could not give the "$1,000" usual donation because they were afraid they were going to lose their social security.  it was so bad that the company was finally calling landlords of the dancers pleading with them not to evict their company members as they would eventually be paid.

as for the lowly costume designer/maker - i was bottom of the list because i was back in new york.  i never did get paid.  i finally dumped all remaining costumes i had to repair for that company at pennies on the dollar to keep from ending up on the street - moved out of new york, quit the business overnight and started working in the computer world.

thank you, ronnie reagan.  may you rot in hell!

anger and bitterness explode.  it hits me unexpectedly sometimes - i just want to cry and cry and cry.

can't do that now - i'm on the floor - selling cars (no, not cars.... ACURAS!) to pay the bills and keep my horse(s) and dogs well (especially my sammy who just got diagnosed with diabetes - amazing what modern veterinary medicine can do!  he's on insulin 24 hrs now and already perking back up!!  YEA!!!)

i miss my life in the theatre - i miss the people - i miss the beauty and imagination - i MISS my world.  maybe before i die - i'll get back - but since i'm a dyslexic 36, my time is short.

i'll be happy to see the current and next generation have a chance to live what i experienced... with obama comes hope!
