  •  Not correct. (none)
The printers in the machine are only used after the fact in case of a recount.  Nothing is printed out at the time the ballot is cast.

And even if they were used (which they never have been here in Tampa), they would only print out what was stored in the machine.  For instance, if (hypothetically) ten people walked in and voted for Kerry, but the machine recorded nine Kerry votes and a Bush vote (again, hypothetically), the 'paper trail' would quite happily print out nine Kerry votes and one Bush vote - never mind that what really happened is that ten people voted for Kerry and none for Bush!

Also, that's not how they recovered the votes that were lost from the primary (and that was this year, not in 2002).  The votes were stored on the cartridge, but they were marked as "testing" votes, not "real" votes.  When the cartridge was read on election night, it reported zero votes.  Eventually they figured out where the lost votes were, and when they checked the cartridge for votes, they found 245 votes marked as "testing" votes that should have been "real" votes.  But since the election had already been certified and the contest period had expired, those votes were never counted.

    •  My bad, garbled morning post (none)
We left the Tampa Kerry party around midnight, and stayed up longer. I'll try to fix my garbled post.

I meant to say that the machines were first used in 2002, and that the primary was this year. I used the machines in 2002 in Hillsborough Co., and remembered the printers. I also saw a demonstration this year that the supervisor of elections had in downtown Tampa, and the girl there told me that the votes were printed on the paper journal. She was the one that told me about the machine being found in testing mode and that they found it by going through all the machines in that precinct that was short votes. What can I say, I believed her. Maybe she didn't explain it well enough, but it sounded to me like she said that they were reading the votes off of the journal. (shrug)

Also, I don't think that I intimated that the journals would print anything other than what was in the computer. ;)

    •  The only acceptable paper trail... (none)
is a printout that the voter looks at and then drops in a box to be saved for potential recounting.

What I don't understand is why this isn't absolutely obvious to everyone who thinks about electronic voting???

ATM machines do it millions of times each day -- hell ATM machines can even count out money with phenomenal accuracy.  Why can't voting machines print out a little slip of paper for you before you leave the voting booth???

      •  The reason it isn't obvious to everyone... (none)
...is the Republicans don't want it to be.

It would be very obvious to everyone if it worked against their interests.

It would be all Rush ever talked about.

Having no paper trail would be unpatriotic.

Having no paper trail would help the terrorists.

Having no paper trail would be the number one issue in America.

    •  You Had My Vote (none)
      I voted for you yesterday.

BTW- We need to you to keep speaking on WMNF. Don't stop.

      •  Yeah, hope you're going to run again next time (none)
This is the first time my wife and I have volunteered for anything political. My wife says she hasn't cried this much since 9/11.

Give me a call. We'll be back helping in 2006, and Job One is stopping this vote stealing crap.

Oh, and eight years ago, we were both Republicans.
