  •  I have heard and read several people say Obama (18+ / 0-)

is the child of hippies. Some say it objectively. Others say it with some derision. Let's hope that Obama may polish the reputation of hippies a bit, giving them their due for their ideals. Anyone who could raise a child as well as Stanley Ann Dunham and her liberal parents did deserve to be acknowledged.

Could be seen as "hippies." Strong-minded, independent thinkers, perhaps, but hippies? I think Obama would laugh at that.

Not Obama's grandparents.  But perhaps you could apply those words to his parents.

      •  Hippies don't have to have long hair and wear (5+ / 0-)

love beads or burn their bras. Hippies question the status quo and imagine things as they should be and aren't scared to seem out of step with "proper" society.

Stanley Ann Dunham married African and Indonesian gentlemen and worked in what were considered non-traditional fields, studying anthropology and helping better the lot of poor, foreign women. From all accounts she was an atheist who married Muslims. Barack's grandmother appeared to be a Unitarian, perhaps the most liberal sect of Christianity. They all uprooted themselves and moved to Hawaii.

The Dunhams may not have looked like hippies but they lived the ideals of hippies.

They may have been more liberal than average for their times, but were pretty straightlaced otherwise. OTOH, while they may not have had the hippie clothes and mannerisms, one could say they had their worldview and spirit... in essence, question authority, all cultures have something to contribute, etc.
