Perhaps more than any other president, Johnson should stand as a stark warning to any president not to engage in any unnecessary war.

Without Vietnam, he would not only likely have stood in office another 4 years (in place of Nixon, with all that substitution would have meant). Johnson without Vietnam would likely have been the most important president of his generation, perhaps collecting most of the celebrity instead enjoyed by Kennedy.

Presidents: if you don't want to be hated, don't get us into unnecessary wars. Bush, I'm looking at you.

My most vivid memory of Johnson was the night of his national broadcast when he told us he was not running for another term and would decline/refuse if nominated.  I was 17 y.o. 11 months, 1 month from filing my paperwork for selective service.

Friends of mine had already been drafted. Several were in Viet Nam.

I did not know how to react then and I still don't. The Great Society was something I innately felt was right, but it was still new. Considering that the times were turbulent, we were losing another president, shock was my initial reaction.

Little did we know Nixon would take the war to exteme levels.  But, he was in the future, not that day.

OBTW, I received my 1-A notice six weeks after turning in my selective service. 5 days after graduating from high school. I was in college 3 days after graduating from high school and went 2-S. I enlisted in the Air Force in 1972.

to say it was merely unnecessary really doesn't get the depth of the wrongness of making war on another people.

and i will extend that warning to our current President, Mr. Obama. It's time to end and dismantle US empire.

Keep the US out of War. Bring the troops home. NOW.
