  •  We take a lot of LBJ's achievements for granted (5+ / 0-)

    Think of what he put into place in only 5 years as president:
    Medicaid, medicare, head start, public broadcasting, upward bound, food stamps, food safety act, cigarette labeling, truth in lending act, a whole raft of environmental laws, and on and on and on.

    And of course the Voting Rights and Civil Rights acts.

    These things would not necessarily have happened eventually, with or without LBJ, as some of the commenters here believe.

    His presidency transformed our country into one that promoted the collective good, rather than every man for himself-- thus, the "Great Society."
