...superb moments with the "As we stand here, waiting for the ballgame to start..." (winks to all who know Albert Brooks' comedy skit).

I Like Marvin Gaye's version greatly because he sang with pure admiration for his country.

Lest we forget, the band backing him up on this version at the NBA All-Star game is none other than the US Marine Corps Jazz Band!
Between Gaye, and the band, they fashioned their feelings into this most soulful, passionate rendition.

They caught a gob of smack for it after but I never once considered the critical comments as valid. This is Marvin Gaye's and the Marine's country too. What they did was the opposite of disrespect; it was an incredible expression of their afinity for the country and the freedom we embrace.

Jimi Hendrix' version... is how I closed down the radio station every Friday night at 4:00 am (Saturday morning), but this was before Marvin Gaye's version.

Lastly, the times when we all sing the Star Spangled Banner... are powerful and moving.

My most favorite version of our anthem? Simple... every time Bonnie Blair won Olympic gold medals and sang the anthem on the podium!

I believe he was singing against a track and it wasn't the Marine Corp Jazz Band - according to an NPR interview (can't find at the moment) with the guy running the place, Gaye was running late.  He came up to him and handed him a tape and they put it in.  Even the people working there had no idea what he was going to sing, and how.
