As I posted a few years ago, I met one of the architects of the system randomly on a long flight.  She worked for IBM and over the flight she revealed that she had been working on a data storage system for voice and email for the government.  She indicated it was a project of HP and IBM and that it was all-encompassing.

I asked her what that meant.

She indicated that the data storage requirements were larger than any database that had ever been acquired from HP or IBM.  Thousands of Petabytes.  She broke it down to say that, while they couldn't yet search the data, they had the capability to store ever phone call in the US indefinitely.

Her guess was that they were storing all of the calls, with the idea that they could go back and search for particular calls when they wanted to track someone down.

If the civilization to which I belong was brought low by the incapacity of individuals ... why did my civilization not create a different type of individual?

    •  I've done enough private sector work... (5+ / 0-)

... involving various sorts of of intrusion detection and fraud analysis to be able to say that I know full well what could be done with an effectively infinite budget and an army of high level, intelligent developers.

There are enough published, respectable papers coming out of academia concerning data mining, distributed computing, huge scale databases and the rest of the requisite technology that it's pretty much safe to say that the technological roadmap is already there.

I briefly worked on a project (which received CIA funding) working on custom ASICs for enhanced search capability.  ... with custom ASICs, custom architectures, and a lot of money, huge amounts of data can be searched.
