  •  True, the administration believes in reality (8+ / 0-)

However, I don't think we've heard much from Mr. Obama about the public health infrastructure, per se.  His discussion of public health has been fairly tangential, in that he presents disease prevention as a strategy for containing health care costs.  That my or may not actually be possible (it's a long story) but it does seem to miss the point somewhat. Emergency preparedness continues to be skewed by the emphasis on "terrorism" and it continues to depend heavily on municipalities which simply are not in any position to truly be ready.  I have yet to see any signs that this will really change soon.

i don't know that he 'misses the point' as much as realizes the political discussion doesn't typically include PH as part of the natural constituency he wants to address, especially in a campaign (how many votes are there for PH?).

Appointments to Surgeon General and permanent CDC director will tell us more. i don't mind if the economy and universal care take precedence so long as it is not overlooked.

      Health department on chopping block

Budget cuts » The agency's duties would go to other government divisions.

not so good, and may raise the issue politically.

but on the other hand, Huntsman is thoughtful and reasoned and there are very strong links from the Med School to his office. His family after all donated well over 250 million dollars to the U to establish this

        Huntsman Cancer institute

I don't think that has a chance in hell to pass. But we will protest and call and email and write and yell.

this particular issue, but many other equally ridiculous proposals from those dimwits on the 'hill'.  Don't even get me going on the proposed education budget cuts. jeez louise, it would blow your mind.

But it seems that Huntsman also has a good relationship with the Obama administration and there is a rumor bandied about that no budget decisions will be made prior to the stimulus package. So hopefully this idea will die a quick death and we can all go about our business trying to stay healthy.

great series of diaries by the way!
