one of my reactions to the punch video was that even if the officer had a legitimate reason to use physical force, the way he did it put himself and his partner in grave danger.

I tend to be cautious about drawing conclusions until a thorough investigation has been made, even where there is video; still the officer seems so to be so reckless of his own safety its hard to imagine how it could possibly involved the kind of rational thought that says, "people might video this."  It'd make more sense to say, "they might jump us, take our guns and shoot us stone cold dead."

Surely, if the officer were in sufficient danger to to justify force on that grounds,  given that he and his partner were outnumbered, that would be the time to step back and draw his sidearm.   If the officer needed to use force to subdue the suspect, he should have waited for backup rather than to start what might be a tussle in which his sidearm might present a fatal threat to every person in that station.

I've lost my faith in nihilism

the likely answer is, "what the eff did he just say to me? i'm a cop damnit, and he will do what i say or i'll beat his ass."

this is how cops operate. they lie, they break laws, they cover for each other.

Almost half of all Americans vote against what is best for themselves and best for America. We call them, Republicans.

important and serious issue that needs to be addressed.

Of course the vast majority of cops do their best to uphold the law they were sworn to protect. But, as someone else in this comment section mentioned, the real problem is the cops who don't or can't say anything or snitch when they do see something go wrong. There needs to be greater incentive for cops to report (or in this case immediately detain and arrest) rogue or non-law-abiding cops.
