any career (she doesn't really work; walks/sits dogs for cash)...but we've found something that will work if she can prove she worked one day in the past year, which she is going to do (work one day) through another friend's company.

The sooner the better.   I learned my lesson about not having health insurance about 3 months after I graduated college.  While I was in college, I was on my parent's insurance.  When I got out,  I didn't really think about needing it (I mean, come on...I was 21 years old!  Immortal!).

Then a drunken guy made a left turn into me at a stoplight and there I was - with hospital bills, rehab bills, the whole deal.

Oh - my car insurance (also had been on my parent's through college) had also lapsed.   Hadn't even realized that.   My car - a $3000 Datsun B210 I'd had through college - was totaled.

Fortunately I got a settlement from the guy, but not until nearly three years later.

Lesson learned.  From then on, I drained my bank account if necessary to pay the Blue Cross quarterly until I made it into the union.   And car insurance - NEVER be without it.  Never.  It's a rip off, but it's a necessity.  And in many states (including California, where I lived then) it became a legal necessity as well.  Fortunately it was not illegal to be uninsured when my accident happened.
