  •  Everybody Knows They're All the Same Issue (5+ / 0-)
By now, most Americans who have any effect on our political life know that economy, jobs, terrorism, energy, military, environment, lobbyists and global warming are all the same issue. We send our money to tyrannical oil regimes that fund or otherwise create terrorism, often in partnership with our military actions that protect the oil industry. The oil damages our environment, but is protected by lobbyists. A lot of Americans can also see that deficit reduction, trade policy and other issues are also determined by our oil policy. The obvious war for oil in Iraq has eliminated any doubt.

So asking Americans to rank those issues as if they're separate is a fallacy. Politics doesn't work by isolating issues, anyway. Remind Americans of the catastrophes wreaked by the Bush/Cheney vision of oil governing our lives, then show them a new vision of independence from dirty, deadly foreign energy - homegrown American tech producing safe, clean domestic energy for a hungry world. Americans are ready to carry that vision into reality.

All it takes is leaders to risk defining that vision in public, in defiance of the old masters who gave us Bush, Cheney and the catastrophes that define our world today. We might even have one in Obama. If not, we'll have to create one. Because the others we have will spin our wheels on those issues as separate, and no one will believe them, because they're blind.

...but strongly disagree with your premise that everybody knows they're all the same issue. If that were true, the economy and the environment would both have gotten 85%; respondents weren't asked to rank these issues in order. And if you actually talk to people, including many who call themselves progressives, they won't say that all these issues are interconnected. I've done it often, including in door to door canvassing of my neighbors in a 75% Democratic, 5% Green precinct.

      •  Depends on How You Ask (0+ / 0-)

If you ask as a list of separate issues, as the Pew survey did, you'll get people to see the elephant as separately a tail, a trunk, some legs, an ear or two, and something really big in the middle.

        But if you say:

We send our money to tyrannical oil regimes that fund or otherwise create terrorism, often in partnership with our military actions that protect the oil industry. The oil damages our environment, but is protected by lobbyists.

...most will agree. When leaders say that to us, we will react. We will see that cycle as the issue, and then pick it apart to solve it. Rather than just start demoting one part of the cycle as a problem, when all it is is a place to start a solution.

    •  All same issue... lobbyists and global warming! (0+ / 0-)

When I noticed that lobbyists (36%) edged out global warming (30%), I couldn't help but wonder about the contributions that lobbyists might make to global warming:
      --hot air
      --belching and flatulence
--CO2 from plane flights and other transportation

If lobbying were curtailed, I wonder what the equivalent reduction in global warming would be in terms of automobiles taken off the road.

Impeachment is a duty, not an option that can be taken off the table.
