  •  the economics of gas-fired plants (10+ / 0-)

functioning as peakers are well understood and they work, ie gas plants can be profitable even if they function at 3-5% capacity factors - simply because they only function at times of peaks in prices, when the additional capacity is REALLY needed.

Now, not all gas-fired plants have been built for that mode, and many are currently used as base load, or semi-base plants, but I expect they could be converted with the right incentives - and they will be if wind penetration increases (or if other meansures like energy efficiency or nuclear are pursued).

peaking or baseload. Most baseload plants are combine cycle ones using "Frame" units and out put on a 1GT/1HRSG of about 250MWs each. Many (most) in the US are built "2-to1" with two Frame units (at about 170MWs each) using discharge heat for another 160 MWs or something similar. They are often used in these "500 MW" blocks. They can run around the clock at 50% efficiency (or more). Cheap to build, expensive to run.

Now, he HRSG (Heat Recovery Steam Generator) is a standard 1000PSI/1000 F degree steam turbine. And because they have governor valves response to system frequency and speed, they can load follow very easily.

The produced prodigious amounts of CO2 and some particulate. Little NOx.
