  •  Lotsa people thought Hillary.... (18+ / 0-)

was going to run into a wall when she joined the Senate, but she was smart.  She spent her first years listening a lot and learning the ropes and it helped her rise in the Senate.  Franken will be smart to heed the "protocols" of the Senate.  He probably will chafe at them, but he ignores them at his peril.

Al is a very funny guy, but this is a new arena and I think he has discovered that people don't mind a little humor in their politicians, but they prefer gravitas.  Al is smart...he knows the issues.  He'll do fine.  The party needs Al and vice versa for the battles ahead.

I am encouraged to see the overall results the Democrats have been getting in the early days of Congressional voting, although I share with many the angst over giving too much too soon to Republicans who will whine and moan constantly to try and whittle legislation from effective to spineless and then vote against it anyway.

There are just enough GOP congressional folks who face rough election contests in 2010 and 2012 that I think we have a good chance to keep winning an appreciable number of battles now, but it won't be consistent and it won't be easy, especially if our side waffles too early and too often pursuing a "bi-partisanship" which the Republicans are trying to spin to their advantage.

Free markets would be a great idea, if markets were actually free.

got some great committee assignments, including Foreign Relations.

If Franken really does wind up with those offered by BooMan, it's a slap in the face. Many Senators have five major committee slots, and Robert Menendez has eight:

      Menendez's Assignments:

      Committee on Foreign Relations
Committee on Energy and Natural Resources
      Committee on Finance
      Committee on the Budget
Committee on Energy and Natural Resources
Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs
      Committee on the Budget
      Committee on Finance

Surely some of these other Senator will give up extra seats to Franken. I'm sure Menendez could survive with six committee assignments instead of EIGHT.

Are you just testing to see if anyone is paying attention?

Let's get solar panels back on the White House roof and invite Jimmy Carter for the ceremony.

....assignments so he could take full advantage of his incumbency after being appointed just a year before the 2006 elections. He really took a lot of leadership roles and was not only re-elected, but is now responsible for getting more Democrats elected to the Senate.

Relations committee - she did get the Armed Services committee but that was in 2002.

Her initial assignments were: HELP, Environment and Public Works, Budget. Only slightly better than Franken's.
