    The Pine Ridge ZIP Code (57770) "wins" the poorest ZIP contest when looking at individual income, at least with 1999 data, at $6,028 per capita, with 59% below the poverty line.

    When looking at median family income, though, the Bronx ZIPs come in lower. The difference can be explained by the huge family sizes in Pine Ridge and the distinction between mean (per capita) and median income.

    Considering that people in the Bronx live in the City of New York, with its $2 bus fares and high cost of living/high taxes, I'm pretty much floored by these numbers. Perhaps things have changed for the better since 1999.
